Yeah, But...Heh I LOVE to Multi-Task!

No, I can't juggle (Joe can :<)) but I do love to multi-task!

I'm happy when I've got at least 2 sometimes more than 2 tasks on the go at the same time.

As an example: I have found myself (and many times!): on the phone, writing a report/list/letter... and eating, all at once. I seem to manage just fine, when it comes to multi-tasking. Doing one thing at a time always seems so SLOW to me! I'm usually trying to cram as much into each day as I can; especially when I'm feeling really energetic. And multi-tasking also makes me feel more energetic!

But, it seems that multi-tasking is not the best idea/strategy; at least according to a number of articles and posts I've been reading recently. These are just a sample of dozens I noted online.

Over at the LumosityBlog; here's what they have to say about multi-tasking.

Another article at the UK Daily Mail about the physical effects of multi-tasking.

And another article from About.com about multi-tasking vs "chunking" I'm going to try chunking myself. Sounds like it might be a good idea, at least at times.

What do you think about multi-tasking?

Do you multi-task on a regular basis?

Do you think it's bad for a person's long-term health?

To be honest, I think it's a female thing mostly. It's just part of us to be able to do 2 or 3 things at a time and do it well lol It's nothing for me to have dinner on the go, laundry on the go, while I wash dishes and prepare lunch for the next day. I swear it's in our genes cos I don't know any man that can concentrate on more than one thing at a time.
And that's just it we (females) can't multi-task WITHOUT having to think aabout it!

ooops that last line should read CAN multitask without thinking about it, lol

i do not like to multi-task, and i feel that aversion to it slows me down in this world. i don't even like music on or the tv when i'm talking on the phone. when i do one thing, that is it. however, i am, for example, about to make lunch. and i love listening to music while i do that. that's multi-tasking for me:)
i used to multi-task well as a newspaper reporter. i'd have a couple different stories on my screen while i did interviews, along with a snickers being devoured, of course:)

Geraldine,
I enjoyed reading the links you shared here, and this was interesting to think about.
I tend to think I'm a good multitasker, and can manage several tasks at once (although I'm not really hooked up to electronic media - I don't have a cell phone, so don't talk/text, etc. while for instance walking down the street.)

I like the idea of chunking.

BTW, this photo is wonderful!
Have a great week!

Hi Cathy, According to the experts, women are MUCH better at multi-tasking, whether it's good for us or not LOL. Men are more focused on single ideas/projects and we aren't suppose to expect them to take on 3-4 requests at once and juggle them well (more LOL) I've seen it time and time again, in relationships I've had over the years. I've stopped trying to expect MT from men (ie: Joe) now. And yes, I also agree with what you said at the end. We don't think about it, do we, we just DO IT!

Hi Ed, It's natural, it's normal ...but you certainly do seem to accomplish so much Ed. One task at a time can be a very good thing.

Hi Brenda, I loved this photo too. Love live Flickr! I'm going to try chunking too, if I can just remember to slow down a bit and actually follow the 'rules' lol.

Happy Week, G :<)

yes, i also multitask - often!
but i must say, that when the electricity goes off I love it, everything calms and i drop into a single state of being that is vast and feels much healthier.

Men like to focus on one thing at a time, I agree. Women tend to multi-task and do it well. Interesting post. I like the photo too.

I can multi-task. I do it all the time, but when I write I prefer to have the TV, radio, ipod, ect. turned off. I like to listen to the sounds around me...the wind chimes, children playing, traffic, the whir of a fan..they all seem to be speaking inspiration I don't want to miss.

__I can,(and do) multitask, but I prefer to focus on one cloud. The more clouds there are(?) the less light... to see.

I have been a multi-tasker all my life and I find it less stressful than trying to do less

I do think I'm becoming more of a chunker than a multi

Hi Tammie, Oh, I like that scene you've conjured up. I love Earth Hour for that reason too. It is so peaceful when all the noise grinds to a halt.

Hi Joe, I thought you'd like this photo! You might not be a multi-tasker but you can certainly juggle! Not me. It's a lot harder than it looks LOL.

Hi Susie, Sounds inspiring, just reading these words. I love wind chimes so much. They are such a beautiful tranquil sound and yes, can be inpspiring too.

Hi Dianne, Me too, in terms of chunking but I still LOVE to multi task even though I understand and acknowledge the reasons it's not the best idea.

Happy St. Patrick's Day, almost here. May the luck of the Irish be shining on all of us!!!

Hugs, G

Geraldine, I'm not a multi-tasker. I think it keeps me from focusing, from being completely committed to what I a doing. The ability to open multiple tabs on the internet makes multitasking a must-do, but it's one I can't do. Damaging, I think.
